Episode 7 - Silat
Paco experiments with High Speed Photography with the practitioners of Silat, a Martial Art we share with our Malay neighbors, shooting their fighting styles as well as their weapons, and enhancing their photographs with CGI work by Underground Logic.
Paco spends a couple of days with athletes from the Philippine Pencak Silat Association, a group which has represented our country in various World Championships abroad. On December 2010, they will battle for the gold again in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Before that, however, Paco places the athletes in various scenes recreated from the Southern Philippines. Shot against a green Chroma background, the scenarios include a father and son meditation; a woman fighting off two men in a beach; a battle in a rainforest; a teacher with his students; a warrior practicing by a Balete tree; a free-for-all rumble on the rice terraces; a tribal portrait set against a village; and, a family on board the balangay, a traditional boat built by the Sama de Lata, the Badjaos. Incidentally, the balangay has also been rebuilt and is currently sailing around ancient routes. Sailing them are the the Mt. Everest team.
Providing the magic beyond the photography is Underground Logic, a post-production house that specializes in CGI and other post processes. The company also provides color-grading for this series.
The episode creates an awareness of our indigenous culture, richness of our heritage, the people who keep them alive, as well as the local talent and technology available today.
The entire shoot takes places in the Pencak Silat gym at the Rizal Memorial Complex and the offices of Underground Logic.
